Festus Emmanuel Rwabuhihi has shunned the nominations for Busiro North by-elections arguing that he can not contest in the same election with former vice president Professor Gilbert Bukenya. This morning, Electoral Commission started conduction nominations of candidates for Busiro North By-elections.
Three candidates including Professor Gilbert Bukenya, Henry Kiwuwa and Festus Emmanuel Rwabuhihi were scheduled for nominations. Both Bukenya and Kiwuwa were nominated in the morning and declared candidates by Wakiso District Returning officer Sarah Bukirwa. Rwabuhihi was scheduled to appear for nominations at 3:30pm but he cancelled his nomination saying the he would not contest in the same election with Bukenya because he was found guilty of electoral malpractices.
He argued that contesting against Bukenya would be approving of the electoral malpractices he was found guilty of in the high court. Rwabuhihi argued that since Bukenya bribed voters in the previous elections, nothing would stop him from doing the same since he is contesting in the same electoral area. He however, vowed to challenge Bukenya at a later date in the constitutional court.
Last month, Justice Kibuuka Musoke threw Bukenya out of parliament when court found him guilty of electoral malpractices. Bukenya was dragged to High court jointly with the Electoral Commission by his rival Hussein Kasta Bukenya for voter bribery. He also accused the Electoral Commission of misspelling his name on the ballot paper as Katya instead of Kasta which he claimed robbed him of the victory.
