Residents of Bugamba Sub County in Rwampara County in Mbarara district are up in arms over low lying electric wires and poles that they say put their lives at risk.
The residents say that low lying electric wires often get in contact resulting into sparks while some poles are on the verge of collapse. Wires leading to Nyamuhandagazi Health Centre II in Nyamuhandagazi parish are lying low and often cause sparks. The situation, according to residents, has been in place for close to two months without any action to rectify the anomaly.
They are faulting Ferdsult Engineering Services Limited, a company sub contracted for the construction of power lines to selected sites of water supply systems in Mitooma, Rwentobo, Ishongorero, Rubare and Rwashamaire towns for ignoring public outcry on the sagging wires.
Nyamuhandagazi Parish LC III Councillor Milton Tumusiime says that the problem is a threat to human life and property. Tumusiime fears for people within trading centers who could unknowingly tamper with the wires.
Juliet Kiguzo, another resident says that the poles in the area have not been replaced for long and is worried that the consequences may not be good once the rains set in.
Eron Nantume, the Ferdsult Manager for Ntungamo area says that the problem in the area is a result of a pole which needs replacement and that plans are underway to have it replaced. She however downplays allegations that the company kept a deaf ear when contacted by locals.
Previously, unsuspecting locals have ended up in contact with live current leading to serious injuries or loss of life.
On March 23, 2016, a housemaid only identified as Anita was electrocuted in Rutenga cell Nyabikoni ward in Kabale municipality while trying to dry her clothes on a hang line that got in contact with low lying electric wires.
