Monrovia, Liberia | After missing out on a place in the 2017 Nations Cup, the national team of Liberia will begin its bid for a third appearance at the continent’s prolific competition on June 11, when the team travels away to Zimbabwe to play at the National Sports Stadium in Harare.

Ahead of the clash, the Lonestars Head Coach, James Salinsa Debbah invited 14 foreign-based players for the continental football showpiece, posting the list via the official Facebook page of the Liberia Football Association, on Thursday, May 26.

Six of the invited players are from Asia, four from Europe, two from Africa, one from North America and one unattached player.

Despite his brilliant form in the United Soccer League with Bethlehem Steels, striker Seku Conneh was omitted from coach Debbah’s squad along with experienced Israeli-based left back, Gizzie Dorbor while unattached Dioh Williams made the list.

Also left out on the list is midfield engineer, Theo Weeks who played a very instrumental role in helping his club Gabala finish second in the 2016-17 Azerbaijani Premier League season. The 27-year old midfielder made 16 appearances for Qabala-based club, registering two goals and helping them finish with 52 points from 28 games.

Weeks who became the first Liberian to score a hat-trick in a European club competition against Samtredia Football Club in the 2016-17 Europa League qualifiers, is a surprise omission from coach Debbah’s squad.

Instead, Indian-based player, Alfred Jaryan was handed a call up to the national team. Jaryan, who operates as an attacking midfielder recently played a key role in helping his club, Aizawl Football Club win the 2016-17 India I-League. He was also voted the league’s best midfielder.

Players given a debut invitation for the Lonestars include; Norway-based striker, Alex Nimely and Spainish club goalkeeper, Boison Wynney
