Mbarara district is to embark on a massive tree planting campaign to conserve the environment. Each department and institution will be required to plant trees under the campaign to restore the deteriorating environment.
Tumusiime Bamuturaki, the Mbarara LC V Chairman, says each of the 17 sub counties in the district and three divisions in Mbarara municipality have set aside between Shillings 1.2 million to 1.3 million to establish nursery tree beds.
He says they intend to plant Eucalyptus, Grevelia and other fruit trees such as Mangoes and avocados among others. Bamuturaki says that once the tree seedlings are ready they will be distributed to schools, hospital, health centers, parish and Sub County headquarters for planting.
Nelson Mugumya, Rwanyamahembe Sub county Chief, says the tree planting drive will save the bare hills that have become a problem in the area.
According to Mugumya, Rwanyamahembe Sub County has allocated Shillings 1.2 million in the 2017/2018 financial budget to carter for the establishment of nursery beds that will be ready for planting in September and October.
Jeconious Musingwire, the South western Uganda Focal Person National Environmental Management Authority, says the tree planting campaign is a wise move.
Musingwire says that the decision is timely since it is aimed at fixing the mess that has seen the water levels in River Rwizi go down.
