Supporters of Kyadondo East parliamentary aspirant Robert Kyagulanyi popularly known as Bobi Wine have faulted the police for arresting him stating that this is meant to intimidate his supporters and rid him of support.
Kyagulanyi was whisked away by police Tuesday morning for holding a rally in a place that was initially reserved for another candidate.
Kyagulanyi’s campaign team says that their candidate was scheduled to address a rally at Kasangati Saza grounds and later at Katadde but police kicked him out of Sazza grounds on account that his presence their violated guidelines by the Electoral Commission.
Electoral Commission Chairman Simon Byabakama says Kasangati Sazza Grounds was not on Bobi Wine’s schedule today.
His arrest triggered chaos in Kasangati Trading Centre where his supporters were seen stoning the police post and blocking roads with logs and stones. Police fired bullets and teargas to disperse the crowd.
Although he was later released, his supporters stated that the move was crafted to intimidate them as they prepare for elections slated for Thursday. Kasangati Town Council chairman Tony Sempebwa says that the odds still play in Kyagulanyi’s favour.
George Katende, a supporter of Kyagulanyi says it’s unfortunate that Government arrests whoever they consider a threat.
Lawrence Kawuki, another supporter said the arrest was uncalled for. He says they should have directed him to where he is meant to be but not take him to police.
The Kyadondo East parliamentary seat fell vacant after the Court of Appeal upheld the decision of the High Court nullifying the victory of FDC’s Apollo Kantinti over non-compliance with electoral laws, disfranchising voters and failing to secure custody of election materials.
The ruling followed a successful petition by NRM candidate Sitenda Sebalu who lost to Kantinti by a margin of 326 votes in the 2016 parliamentary race. The two candidates are facing off again in the race which attracted four independent candidates.
They include Kayongo Sowedi Male, Nkuyingi Muwada, Kasasa Edward and musician Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine.
The elections will be held on Thursday 29.
