Zimbabwe have been invited to take part in the 2017 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup slated for November 25th to December 9th in Kenya.
The Warriors participation will create a tough task for the regional defending champions Uganda who won the title in 2015 in Ethiopia.
” We decided to invite Zimbabwe as guests from the COSAFA region because they also occasionally invite our teams for their tournaments in the Southern region,” Cecafa Secretary General, Nicholas Musonye told this publication on Tuesday.
The Warriors of Zimbabwe are also the champions of the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) Castle Cup that they won in July this year. ” Having Zimbabwe participate in the Challenge Cup will add more competitiveness,” added Musonye.
Uganda Cranes will hope to use the Challenge Cup to prepare the team head of the 2018 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) that will take place in Morocco.
Last year the regional body Cecafa failed to organise the Senior Challenge Cup after Sudan and Kenya all pulled out of hosting at the last moment. Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Rwanda, Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan and South Sudan are all members of Cecafa.
