The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have said that former Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura is being questioned on a matter whose details cannot be divulged at this point.
A statement issued this evening by the UPDF Spokesperson Brig Richard Karemire confirms that Kayihura is now detained at Makindye Military Barracks and can be accessed by his immediate family as well as his lawyers.
General Kayihura was arrested yesterday from his home in Kasagama- Lyantonde under the directive of the UPDF Chief of Defence Forces Gen David Muhoozi. He was flown in a UPDF helicopter to Mbuya General Headquarters and referred to Makindye last evening.
Earlier today, the Government Chief Whip Ruth Nankabirwa said that no one is above the law adding that the government is determined to end all forms of criminality in the country. Nankabirwa added that the government had stepped out of the comfort zone to end the business-as-usual approach in addressing crime.
She added that Kayihura was summoned to respond to matters of criminality that arose during his tenure in office as Inspector General of Police although she said she could not break down specific charges against him.
Nankabirwa says Government has concluded that a number of people are misusing the freedom that exists in the country.
