Hosts Kenya were in good form stopping Uganda 3-0 in a Group B Africa Zone Group III match of the Davis Cup in Nairobi on Monday at the Nairobi Club.
In the absence of Uganda’s top player Duncan Mugabe who is serving a suspension for indiscipline, David Oringa took to the field first and lost to 18-year old Sheil Kotecha 6-4, 7-6 (4).
Youngster Boris Aguma who picked one ranking point from the ITF Pro Circuit last month in Kampala also suffered defeat to Ismael Changawa Ruwa Mzai 6-2 6-1.
In the doubles, the Kenyan pair of Kevin Cheruiyot and Ibrahim Kibet Yego humbled Uganda’s Simon Peter Ayella and Frank Tayebwa 6-2 6-3. “It was a bad start yesterday, but we hope to play better against Namibia on Tuesday,” head coach John Oduke told this publication on phone from Nairobi.
In the second Group B game played on Monday Namibia brushed aside Algeria 3-0 with Jean Erasmus and Tuki Jacobs all winning their singles games.
Erasmus and Jacobs also combined efforts to win their doubles game. Mozambique are the other team in Group B. Group A has Cameroon, Benin, Nigeria, and Rwanda
The winner of each pool will play off against the runner-up of the other pool to determine which two nations are promoted to Europe/Africa Zone Group II in 2019.
