Ugandans unaware of where to sale agricultural produce
80 percent of the farmers in Uganda are engaged in both substance and commercial agriculture. However, the sector only contributes to 46 percent of export earnings mainly because most of the farmers don't know where and how to market their produce.

Most Ugandans engaged in subsistence farming are ignorant about the available market for their produce, the Commissioner in charge of trade Raymond Agaba has said.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), 35 percent of Uganda’s land is being cultivated with 80 percent of the farmers engaged in both substance and commercial agriculture.

However, the sector only contributes to 46 percent of export earnings mainly because very few of the farmers know where and how to market their produce.

During an interaction with journalists in Entebbe, Agaba indicated that despite the Ugandans having less knowledge on the available markets, the products cultivated by agriculturalists in Uganda remain of poor quality and thus do not meet the required standards. He said that only 30 percent of the agricultural produce in Uganda meets the required standards.

The commissioner was representing the Minister for Trade and Industry at the opening of the Shoprite supermarket in Entebbe.

Agaba told journalists that government through the ministry of Trade and tourism has adopted a policy “Buy Uganda, Build Uganda (BUBU)” which would help people in the country buy locally made products and increase earnings of the different companies before they tap into the international market.

Cyprian Kavuma, a commercial officer in the Municipal Development foundation in Entebbe asked the government to regulate imports in order to allow local suppliers in both the Agricultural and industrial sectors to obtain market for their products.
