Kampala, Kitara regions win 2018 Airtel raising stars national tournament
His Royal Majesty Dr Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV graced the Airtel Rising Stars 7th season finals at Buhinga Stadium

The Kampala region under 17 boy’s team and Kitara region under 17 girls’ team are the champions of this year’s Airtel Raising Stars National Tournament. Both teams put up a spirited fight to bag Shillings 5 million each at the finals played at Buhinga playground in Fort Portal on Sunday.

The Kampala region team drew 1 all with Buganda region in full time pushing the match to penalty shootouts. Kampala region netted 6 goals against five managed by Buganda region. The final match between the Western region under 17 girl’s team and Kitara region also ended in a goalless draw.

Western region lost out to Kitara region 4-2 in penalty shootouts. The two runner ups walked away with a cheque of Shillings 3 million each at a function presided over by King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.

Airtel’s Managing Director, VG Somasekhar explained that the aim of the tournament is to help young footballers in Uganda to develop their talents in football.

He thanked the teens for participating in the tournament, saying the skills they have gained will help them develop their football career.

Edgar Watson, the Chief Executive Officer of the Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA), says their vision is to make Uganda top African football.

The Tooro Prime Minister, Bernard Tungakwo thanked Airtel for choosing to hold the tournament in the kingdom, saying it benefits the area economically and helps youth develop their football talent.

The annual Airtel Raising Stars National Tournament started in 2011. However, the tournament didn’t take place last year.
