Blood shortage hits Masafu Hospital in Busia district
Blood transfusion saves lives and improves health, but many patients requiring transfusion do not have timely access to safe blood due to shortage.

Patients are stuck at Masafu main hospital as the facility operates without blood for transfusion. Masafu Hospital is located at Masafu sub-county in Busia district and serves the districts of Namayingo and Mayuge.

Dr Emmanuel Tumusiime, the Medical Superintendent says that the Health facility has been operating for five months without blood. He explains that the hospital receives at least an average of two patients daily especially children suffering from Anemia.

Dr Tumusiime notes that due to blood shortage, patients are referred to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital while other patients prefer to access services in Kenya.

Christine Nandera, a parent says that she was turned away several times when she needed blood transfusion for her child. Nandera says that she can’t take her child to other health facilities due to lack of transport.

Richard Wanyama, a parent wants the government to come to their rescue.

Judith Nakiyumbwe, a resident from Kityerera village in Mayuge district narrates that she had spent a full week at the facility waiting for blood transfusion.
