Police in Kwania District have arrested two parents for marrying off their 15-year-old daughter.
Innocent Okello and his wife Jessica Okello residents of Ajok village, Inomo Sub County were arrested on Friday following a tip-of from residents.
It is alleged that the couple married off the girl to a man in his later 30s.
Godfrey Bagonza, Kwania District Police Commander said that the parents had received two bulls, goats, chicken and some unspecified amount of money as dowry.
Bagonza, says that police is hunting for the man, whose identity he refused to disclose.
According to Bagonza, the parents face two counts of defilement and procuring defilement.
Teenage pregnancy rate in northern Uganda stands at 145 per 1,000 girls, according to the 2016 Uganda Demographic and Health Survey.
The National Population and Housing Census 2014 estimates that about 3,728 teenage girls were married off in Lira District, with Aromo Sub-county leading with 455 girls.
Lango Cultural Institution recently passed a resolution to regulate traditional marriage of teenage girls.
Benson Dila, the Speaker Lango Cultural Foundation says the resolution prohibits child marriages adding that for any marriage to be recognized by the Cultural Institution it must be involving a girl above the age of 18.
