Ugandan musician and blogger Michael Kalinda, better known as Ziggy Wine, has died from injuries sustained during his torturous ordeal

Kampala, Uganda | URN | People Power activist and local musician Michael Kalinda popularly known as Ziggy Wine has passed on at Mulago Hospital.

The member of the Firebase Crew, Ziggy Wine died yesterday night from injuries sustained after being tortured a few weeks ago. Kalinda was kidnapped by unknown people on June 21 while on his way to a music studio in Kamwokya.

He was last week reportedly dumped at Mulago Hospital entrance with his two fingers cut off and left eye plucked out in an apparent torture ordeal. Kalinda’s body according to some family members bore hallmarks of torture burns seemingly from a hot flat iron box.

Family members and Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine point to security agencies saying Kalinda was murdered because of his People Power constancy.

James Mubiru, who worked closely with Ziggy Wine, confirmed the artiste’s death early Monday.

“It’s hard to believe that my brother, my friend and fellow comrade in the struggle has gone to meet with the Lord. We have tried all we can in our capacity to see Ziggy makes it but, unfortunately, in vain,” said Mubiru.

The motorbike that Ziggy Wine was riding the day he disappeared is also missing.

On Thursday, Bobi Wine talked of how his “close friend” had been tortured.

“My close friend and fellow artiste (Ziggy Wine) was kidnapped a couple of weeks back, beaten beyond recognition, his left eye plucked out, two of his fingers cut off, all his belongings taken and dumped in Mulago Hospital and left for dead,” he said.

He said that at the time, Ziggy Wine was in such a bad state that he had lost nearly all his senses and was surviving on God’s mercy.

In an earlier interview, Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango had said they were yet to register a complaint from the musician’s family but that they would investigate to find out who was behind the kidnap.

“We will try to establish if it is true he was kidnapped. We will also wait for him to recover and record statements on whether he remembers where he was being detained,” Onyango said then.

Meanwhile, a team of police detectives from the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) has commence the probe on circumstances under which Ziggy Wine was kidnapped, beaten and left for dead a couple of weeks ago.

Fred Enanga on Monday 5th said a team of homicide detectives has started tracing for the thugs who kidnapped Kalinda from his home in Gganda, Wakiso District.

“The detectives from Kawempe Police Division will work along CID homicide officers to establish circumstances under which Ziggy Wine was kidnapped and maimed leading to his death,” he said.

Security agencies including police and the Internal Security Organisation (ISO) have declined to comment on the matter. But kidnap and torture of opposition activists has become more frequent several released victims pointing a finger at ISO.
