Gomba, Uganda | URN | Several supporters of Kyadondo East Member of Parliament Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine in Gomba district are currently nursing wounds after clashing with police on Thursday 22nd.
According to Musa Kayiwa, a resident in Mpenja trading centre, the supporters mainly youths were tipped that Bobi Wine was on his way to the area to attend a burial of an elder in the Bukalagi sub-county, Romano Nsobya.
“You know how youths behave when they hear about Bobi Wine’s presence and this was massive given the fact that this is his home district where he rarely comes to. It a homecoming kind of,” Kayiwa told this publication.
However, the joy was short-lived as police heavily deployed and started dispersing them using tear gas and live bullets, causing several youths to sustained minor injuries.
Unidentified youth was seriously injured on his arms and rushed to Gombe hospital.
Police also mounted a roadblock with an intention to stopping Bobi Wine to attend the burial ceremony. However, their efforts never yielded results after Bobi Wine used short cuts to attend the burial.
Phillip Mukasa, the Katonga Regional Police Spokesperson, says that the youths closed the road in different towns and police officers pleaded with them to cheer from roadsides in vain.
Joel Ssenyonyi, the People Power spokesperson wondered why the police harasses people with different political ideologies.
This is not the first time police in Gomba has clashed with supporters of Bobi Wine.
Last year two youths were shot dead within the same area during protests following the arrest of Bobi Wine in Arua.
Gomba is the birthplace of Bobi Wine.
