Police in the Greater Masaka sub-region has launched a manhunt for Musa Galiwango, one of the most wanted criminals in the region.
The search follows the death of his colleague Muhammad Kiddawalime, who was lynched by a mob on Tuesday during a foiled robbery at the home of Resty Nakyambadde, a midwife at Bukulula health Centre IV.
The two suspects had initially been arrested as part of a group that attacked four villages in Lwengo and Bukomansimbi districts killings five people on New Year’s Day. But they escaped from Masaka court on March 1, the day they had appeared for the mention of the case before committal to the High Court.
They have since been on the run. But as fate would have it, the two were ambushed by a mob in Mukoko village, Bukulula Sub County in Kalungu district after an attack on one of the residents.
According to Nakyambadde, her home was raided in the wee hours on Tuesday by thieves that broke into the house after smashing the door glasses. She narrates that in the process of breaking the main door to gain access to the house, her foster daughter Suzan Kyosimire called one of the village security committee members who accordingly mobilized for a response force.
During the time, the thugs asked them to surrender all the money in the house if they wished not to be harmed and pause for nude pictures which they took using smartphones. In the process of taking pictures, an emergency response team comprising village security committee members and the local police arrived and fired bullets to rescue the situation.
Stephen Twinomugisha, the Officer in Charge of Bukulula Police Station says that the thieves engaged the team in a bitter scuffle as they resisted arrest which prompted them to raise alarms that attracted others residents to the scene. The charged mob that showed up instantly pounced onto Kiddawalime and killed him.
He adds that although he emerged at the scene in time with two more other officers to rescue the victims, they were overpowered by the mob that killed one of the suspects. Twinomugisha says he also sustained an injury on the left hand after he was bitten by the killed suspect who tried to snatch his gun.
He says that the suspects have earlier on carried out similar robberies in the same area.
Lameck Kigozi, the greater Masaka regional Police spokesperson says Kiddawalime’s body is still at the Masaka Regional Referral Hospital Mortuary as the hunt for Galiwango is still ongoing. He claims that Galiwango also sustained injuries in the scuffle, which he says will security trace for him.
