Four fishermen have drowned in Lake Victoria in Kalangala district. Two of the deceased were returning to Kasekulo landing site from Kamuwunga where they had gone fishing. The remaining victims are from Kisaba and Nkose landing sites.
Fred Mweru, an eye witness, says one of the deceased he identifies as Yusuf Mbaziira had gone into the lake to collect his fishing nets but his boat hit by strong winds forcing it to capsize. Lake Victoria experiences strong winds “Kisaawa” from Tanzania in June and August.
In May, Ibrahim Ssenyonga, the Red Cross Manager Kalangala district warned residents and travelers against venturing into the lake without lifesaving jackets. The Kalangala District Police Commander, Richard Musisi has confirmed the death of the four people. He also discloses that the Marine Police in Nkose managed to save other people whose boat capsized on Lake Victoria.
Carol Nanyondo Birungi, the Kalangala Woman Member of parliament has asked boat owners and travelers to use the available gears to protect their lives during this turbulent period.
Police have instructed all boat owners to buy lifesaving jackets for people using their boats.
