UCU student reverses guilty plea in pornography trial
Lillian Rukundo

Lillian Rukundo, a 23-year-old student of Uganda Christian University (UCU) has altered her plea and pleaded ‘not guilty’ to charges of broadcasting pornographic material and computer misuse.

Rukundo is accused of taking pictures and videos of her nakedness and circulating them on social media. She had pleaded guilty to the charges early this week and was due for sentencing on Friday afternoon.

Instead, Rukundo told court presided over by Buganda Road chief magistrate Mariam Ayo Okello that she’s not the person in the still pictures and video circulating on social media. Upon the change of her plea, the magistrate remanded her to Luzira prison until July 16 when she will return to court to begin the trial.

Rukundo was arrested on Friday, July 5, 2018, from Mukono on the orders of the Pornographic Control Committee after receiving information that Rukundo had taken a video and pictures and shared them on social media and on an online television; Ghetto TV on May 24 and 25, 2018.

Prosecution alleges that Rukundo, while in her hostel in Mukono produced a video of herself masturbating and shared it through social media for purposes of sexually arousing whoever watched it. She now faces 10 counts of broadcasting pornographic material of her naked body.

Ashraf Kato, the proprietor of Ghetto TV popularly known as Arshburg Kato was the first to be arrested when he published the said video on his YouTube channel and is currently on remand in Luzira prison.
