Police have picked up Dr. Kizza Besigye, the former Forum for Democratic Change President. Officers from the Field Force Unit (FFU) apprehended Besigye Thursday morning when he stepped out of his home in Kasangati in Wakiso district to inquire what they were doing on his compound.
He was whisked off and dragged into a waiting blue police van and driven off to unknown destination. The arrest of Besigye followed the deployment of several officers outside his home and those of other opposition politicians like City Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago and Ingrid Turinawe, the FDC Women League Chairperson.
Early in the day, Luke Oweisigire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson defended the deployment, saying they had received information that they were planning to cause violence in the city. “We have got information that these leaders are planning to cause violence and we cannot allow this to happen again,” says Oweisigire.
On Wednesday evening, police issued a statement indicating that they had foiled a plan to set Kampala City ablaze when they impounding two trucks loaded with old car tyres.
