Mbale municipality owes Umeme UGX 60M in unpaid power bills
Paul Ssempira, the Manager Umeme Mbale branch, says they are waiting for the municipal authorities to agree on a payment plan before they reconnect power on the street lights.

The street lights in Mbale municipality have been dysfunctional for the last two years due to an accumulated power bill worth Shillings 60 million.

The Mbale Town Clerk, Paul Batanda, says the power distributors, Umeme disconnected the street lights because of none payment by council.

Juma Mafabi, a resident of Nylon cell in Industrial division in Mbale Municipality calls upon Mbale Municipal authorities to agree with Umeme on the mode clearing the accumulated bills so to light the streets again.

“It is long overdue and we need power on all the streets in Mbale town,” he said. Adding that, “That there is no short cut and Municipal council should pay for the accumulated power bills”.

Apparently, only the newly built roads under the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) project Republic Street, Mugisu Hill, Nabuyonga Rise and Pallisa road are fully lit since the project had a component of solar light.
