Luweero, Kampala Judicial officers complain of sexual harassment at work

Judicial officers from Luweero and Kampala have complained that they are sexually harassed while executing their duties.

The officers revealed this when discussing the challenges they encounter while at work on Thursday 20th in Mukono.

This was revealed during a performance management workshop for judicial officers for Kampala and Luweero High Court circuits. The workshop was organized by Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

Forty Judicial officers from Luweero and Kampala attended the workshop and the aim was to enhance the capacity of judicial officers so that they can perform and this is a continuous process to help them be on top of the game while executing duty.

At the training judicial officers raised several challenges they face at work which include; health complications, depression, demotivation among others.

Grade one magistrate, Her Worship Glady Kamasanyu attached to Buganda Road Court who never wanted to be recorded said that as Judicial officers some of their marriages fail because they cannot travel with their husbands/partners when transferred and they are also sexually harassed by their immediate bosses.

“We break up with our families because our husbands are far away from us and that is the reason why very many judicial officers are not married,” said Kamasanyu.

The officers also said they face insecurity at work place, political interference when making some judgements and health complication among others.

Hon. Christine Amongin Aporu, commissioner Judicial Service Commission (JSC) said the training has helped them to know the problems judicial officers face and they will try to find solutions.

Ronald Sekaggya, Registrar in charge of education and public affairs said that the judicial officers find a lot of challenges but they have to be well trained to be able to deal with some of the challenges..

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) is mandated to do all these as established under article 146(1) of the 1995 Constitution of the Republic of Uganda.

This performance management workshop for judicial officers is a country wide exercise where all judicial officers have to attend.
