Police in Kabale is holding four people in connection with an arson attack that left one person dead and two others in critical condition.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening in Buhinga village in Rubaya Sub County, Kabale district when a group of people attacked the home of Tom Karegyesa and torched his house. Area resident Emmanuel Tumuhimbise says that the group accused Karegyesa of killing 66-year-old Annet Friday, a resident of Karujanga village in Katuna Town council who died mysteriously on March 7th.
Tumuhimbise says that the group comprising relatives and friends of the deceased stormed Karegyesa’s home and held him together with his wife, Jessica Mbirirwe, 66, and their daughter Miracle Natamba, 22, and took them to Karujanga playground where they were burnt with petrol.
Elly Maate, the police spokesperson for Kigezi region says that the victims were rescued by officers from Katuna Police Station and rushed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital albeit with severe burns. Karegyesa succumbed to burns yeserday while the wife and the child are still in critical condition.
Maate adds that four suspects were arrested and are now detained at Kabale Central Police Station for questioning. He, however, declined to divulge details of their particulars for fear of jeopardizing investigations.
