Doha, Qatar | URN | Star runner Joshua Cheptegei has won Uganda’s second gold medal and $67,000 at the IAAF World Athletics Championship in Doha, Qatar.
The 10,000m final saw Uganda’s Mande Abdalla start from the front in the early laps at the Khalifa International Stadium before Cheptegei raced to win the race on Sunday night.
Joshua Cheptegei put up a good show battling against Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha in the last lap in a time of 26:48.36. He set the world-leading (WL) time in the season.
Kejelcha set a personal best time of 26:49.34, while Kenya’s Rhonex Kipruto won a bronze medal after coming third in a time of 26:50.32.
Last month Joshua Cheptegei also set a personal best time when he won the men’s 5,000m during the IAAF Diamond League in Switzerland. Cheptegei is also the reigning World Cross Country champion.

Last Monday Uganda’s Halimah Nakaayi won a gold medal in women’s 800m final at the same championship in Doha. Nakaayi posted 1:58.04 breaking the national record.
The 2012 London Olympic gold medalist Stephen Kiprotich finished 18th in the marathon on Saturday. Uganda has now won two medals at the championship. Twenty-two athletes represented Uganda at the event that ended yesterday.
