Kampala, Uganda | URN | A suspected arsonist who was shot by police after setting himself on fire at Masanafu Police Post on Tuesday 10, January 2023 night has passed on.
The Deputy Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire explains that an unidentified man approached the police post at around 11:30 pm with a 2-litre water bottle containing an unknown substance.
According to Owoyesigyire, one of the officers who was manning the station asked the man what was in the bottle and what had brought him to the police post. He, however, says that the man responded by pouring the substance and setting a fire.
“Unfortunately, he got burnt in the process, and started running towards the officers, prompting one of them to shoot at him,” he said.
He explains that the officers managed to put out the fire and rushed the man to Mulago National Referral Hospital for treatment.
“He has since succumbed to the injuries he sustained at Masanafu Police Station,” Owoyesigyire said.

He explained that a team of investigators rushed to the scene and picked up the bottle that has been exhibited for analysis to ascertain the contents. He says that the team also picked up a matchbox that the man used to start the fire, a photocopy of a National ID in the name of Charles Bazil Kintu, and a phone that will aid their investigations.
“Investigations into the matter have commenced to establish the attacker’s motive and whether he is part of the gang that has been attacking police stations or not,” he said.
It is not clear whether this incident is related to several attacks on police stations that occurred last year in Kampala, Luwero, and Mbale Districts.
