Museveni appoints Abbas Byakagaba new Inspector General of Police
Abbas Byakagaba has been appointed by President Museveni as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP).

Kampala, Uganda | By Michael Wandati | President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Abbas Byakagaba as the new Inspector General of Uganda Police (IGP), with the appointment taking effect immediately.

Byakagaba, who recently retired from the force, will be deputized by AIGP James Ochaya, who replaces Maj Gen Geoffrey Katsigazi.

This appointment of Abbas Byakagaba as new IGP follows the conclusion of Martins Okoth Ochola’s term as Inspector General of Police (IGP) in March 2024.

Bringing extensive experience to the position, Byakagaba has previously served as the Counter Terrorism (CT) commander and Human Resource Director.

His appointment is viewed as a strategic effort to strengthen the country’s security framework.

The news has caused significant reactions within the police hierarchy, with many welcoming the decision to place an experienced officer in the top position.
