Kampala, Uganda | By Michael Wandati | President Museveni has summoned the Speaker of Parliament Anita Among for a meeting to discuss various critical issues.
A key item on the agenda is the preparation for the State of the Nation Address, scheduled for June 6, where the President will outline the current state of the economy and other governance matters, just ahead of the 2024/25 National Budget presentation.
This meeting with President Museveni at State House occurs amidst significant pressure on Speaker Anita Among, who is facing severe sanctions imposed by Western governments.
Recently, the United States (US) joined the United Kingdom (UK) in sanctioning Speaker Among, her husband Moses Magogo, junior minister Amos Lugoloobi, and former deputy Chief of Defence Forces Lt Gen Peter Elwelu.
The Speaker Anita Among is also dealing with a contentious issue in Parliament.

Ruling NRM party legislators Theodore Ssekikubo and Sarah Opendi are spearheading a censure motion against fellow members Esther Afoyochan (Zombo Woman – NRM), Prossy Akampulira Mbabazi (Rubanda Woman – NRM), Solomon Silwany (Bukooli Central – NRM), and Mathias Mpuuga (Nyendo-Mukungwe – NUP). They are accused of improperly receiving a total of Shs 1.7 billion as a service award without parliamentary approval.
President Museveni is reportedly upset about this so-called service award and is concerned that the Speaker has not intervened as Ssekikubo and Opendi garner support from other legislators, leading to speculation about the ruling party’s involvement.
In a surprising turn of events, Soroti West MP Jonathan Ebwalu, previously a staunch supporter of Speaker Among, signed the censure motion on Friday, raising further speculation that he may have been compelled to do so.
