Three people killed in Bobi Wine’s Masaka procession

Masaka, Uganda | By Michael wandati | At least three people have died and unspecified number of others sustained critical injuries in a fatal accident involving the procession of National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine to Masaka City for his mobilization activities ahead of the 2026 general election.

The incident occurred on the Kampala-Masaka Highway on Friday 31, May 2024 morning, as reported by the police.

Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, stated that the fatal crash took place in Nsangi and involved two vehicles, a Toyota Hiace and a Toyota Noah, along with three motorcycles.

“While the president of National Unity Platform a was in  procession to Masaka, the Toyota Hiace, registration number UBQ 691Q knocked the Toyota Noah registration number UAT 157A which was in the same convoy,” Owoyesigyire said.

He reported that the Toyota Noah subsequently collided with three boda bodas that were part of the procession to Masaka City.

According to the police, two individuals, including a rider and a passenger, died instantly, while a third victim succumbed to their injuries while being transported to Mulago Hospital for treatment.

“The bodies have been transported to the City mortuary in Mulago for postmortem,”Owoyesigyire said, adding the investigations into the accident have kicked off.

The accident comes at a time when the police had approved mobilization meetings for the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP).

Previously, law enforcement had cautioned about the lack of discipline displayed by Kyagulanyi’s supporters during processions.

On Friday 31, May 2024, the police emphasized the importance of caution to NUP supporters while traveling on the road.
