Nairobi, Kenya | By Michael Wandati | Residents of Nairobi’s Mukuru kwa Njenga slums were gripped with shock on Friday following the discovery of at least six decomposing human bodies at a local dumpsite.
The bodies, wrapped in sacks, were found at the site, with police reporting that some were recently deceased while others were in advanced stages of decomposition.
Preliminary police investigations revealed that six of the bodies were women. Witnesses and authorities noted that some of the bodies showed signs of burns, suggesting they may have been killed elsewhere and then disposed of near the Kware Police Station.
The grim discovery was made by local youths around midday on Friday, July 12.
Police arrived at the scene as the bodies were being retrieved by the youth and assisted in transporting them to the mortuary for identification and autopsy. Authorities have launched an investigation, but the perpetrators of the murders remain unknown.
There are concerns that more bodies may be discovered as the site is extensive and continued to emit a foul odor even after the removal of the nine bodies.

Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei confirmed that the deaths are being treated as homicides and are under active investigation.
This discovery follows complaints of several people missing after last month’s anti-tax protests in the country.
Some of the missing individuals have been found dead in mortuaries, while others remain unaccounted for. Various government agencies are investigating these disappearances, leaving many families in distress.
