Tororo, Uganda | By Michael Wandati | A youth from Merikit Sub-county in Tororo District was arrested by the army on Thursday 11, July 2024 during a UPDF recruitment drive attended by hundreds of hopefuls.
The 23-year-old was apprehended after being found in possession of forged Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) documents, according to army officials.
“His certificate was indicating 2021 yet UNEB never set exams during the year due to COVID-19,” said Colonel Saad Katemba, the in-charge of recruitment eastern region.
The suspect was later handed over to the police, and during interrogation, he admitted that he had only completed Senior Three.
“He has been handed over to police for investigations to provide information on how he got fake UNEB documents of 2021,” Albert Amula, deputy RDC Tororo, said.

The UPDF has faced significant challenges with recruits forging academic documents since the beginning of the recruitment process two months ago.
Col. Katemba confirmed that extensive measures have been implemented to combat this issue.
“We have gadgets to check the authenticity of the documents they have,” he said.
The arrested suspect was among the 116 applicants who turned out for UPDF recruitment in Tororo. The UPDF had set up camp in the district to manage recruitment for the three districts of Busia, Butaleja, and Tororo.
