Five more sacks with decomposing bodies found in Nairobi dumpsite
Five more decomposing bodies were found in a quarry in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi on Saturday, according to police, sparking a protest at a nearby police station.

Nairobi, Kenya | By Michael Wandati | The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has announced further unsettling discoveries in the ongoing investigation at a local quarry.

Five additional nylon bags with severely mutilated, decomposing bodies were retrieved on Saturday in a quarry at Mukuru kwa Njenga slums in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, following a statement made on July 12, 2024. Three of these bags contained dismembered female body parts.

The first bag held two legs severed from the knee downwards, the second bag contained two sections of a body—one from the neck to the waist and another from the head to the waist—and the third bag contained a lower limb from the thigh to the knee.

The other two bags held non-human contents: one contained a dog’s carcass, and the other was filled with garbage.

Police say some of the bodies appeared fresh while others had already decomposed.

The DCI has assured the public that the investigation will be thorough and will explore all possible angles, including the involvement of cultists and potential serial killings. The government is deploying all necessary resources and manpower to expedite this investigation.

In a recent incident, a team of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory faced obstruction from agitated members of the public while attempting to access the scene.

Angry residents who marched to the nearby Kware police station were dispersed by teargas as shots rang in the air.

The DCI understands the emotional impact of these developments and urges the public to remain calm and allow the detectives to proceed with their work to ensure justice for the victims.

The horrifying scene comes after weeks of anti-government protests over a since-scrapped finance bill.

The protests resulted in scores of civilian deaths amid a heavy-handed response from Kenyan police.

Human rights groups have also accused security forces of abducting Kenyans during the protests.

The discovery of the bodies on Friday has sparked fresh public anger and brought a new spotlight to Kenya’s femicide crisis, just months after thousands of women marched on the streets with banners reading: “Stop killing us.”

To maintain transparency, the DCI has invited the families of the victims, interested parties, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), civil society organizations, and human rights activists to participate in the postmortem exercise.

This step aims to ensure the investigation is conducted openly and thoroughly, bringing closure to the families and holding those responsible accountable.
