Parents beat 11-year-old son to death for 'refusing' to wash dishes

Mount Elgon, Uganda | By Michael Wandati | Police in Bulambuli‘s Mount Elgon district are searching for a couple for allegedly flogging their 11-year-old child to death.

The incident took place on July 13, July 2024 at around 4 p.m.

According to police reports, Wecilif Ebusulu, 11, a student at Kikobero Primary School, had refused to wash dishes as instructed by his parents on July 12. Instead, Ebusulu ran away and spent the night outside.

When he returned home the next day, his father, Robert Omoit, allegedly started beating him, with his mother, Juliet Nakaima, joining in.

After the beating, Ebusulu’s condition deteriorated. Nakaima rushed him to Peter’s Clinic in Buyaga Town Council, but he died shortly after arriving.

Police reported that both parents disappeared following the incident, leaving the community in shock.

The incident was reported by Michael Webale, the chairman of LC1 of Sibanga Cell, Market Ward, Buyaga Town Council.

“I have never witnessed such a heartbreaking event in our community,” said Webale. “We are all devastated by the loss of this young life.”

Police have taken Ebusulu’s body to Bulambuli Health Centre IV for further examination.

Authorities have launched an intensive search for Robert Omoit and Juliet Nakaima, both aged 38.

The police are urging anyone with information regarding the suspects’ whereabouts to come forward.

“This is a heinous crime, and we are committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice,” said a police spokesperson. “We encourage anyone with information to report to the nearest police station.”

As investigations continue, police remain hopeful that the suspects will soon be apprehended to face justice for their alleged crime.

In a related incident in June 2024, a student at Kabujani Primary School in Mbale City died after being subjected to corporal punishment by a teacher.
