UPDF soldier, URA staff killed in shooting incident in Kyengera

DPC raids night bar, shoots man dead during curfew operations

Wakiso, Uganda | By Michael Wandati | On Tuesday evening, a tragic shooting occurred in Buddo, Kyengera Town Council along Masaka Road in Wakiso District, resulting in the deaths of a UPDF soldier and a Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) staff member.

ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson identified one of the deceased persons as Nalumansi Evelyne Zaliya Kilonde Katende, 50, a resident of Mpangala Cell, Kyengera Town Council in Wakiso District.

The second victim according to Owoyesigyire was an unidentified individual dressed in UPDF camouflage attire.

According to reports, a gunman on a boda-boda motorcycle fired upon a vehicle with registration number UAK 375U, in which the two victims were traveling. The vehicle was being driven by the deceased army officer.

A food vendor was also injured in the incident, which took place around 8:00 PM.

While the URA staff member’s identity remains unconfirmed, some reports suggest that the civilian victim was associated with URA. This information has not been verified.

Eyewitnesses said they heard about five bullets during the incident.

The public information officer of the UPDF First Division, Major Charles Kabona, said the matter is being investigated.

“Last night around 8:00 PM, In Buddo Kyengera area un identified person wearing UPDF uniform in a car number UAK 375U Toyota progress and a women Ms Nalumasi Erazara (RIP) were killed. The SOCO rushed and managed the scene of crime,’ he said in a statement.

“The UPDF, Police and sister security agencies are working jointly to ascertain the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident.The investigation are on going and we request the public to avail necessary information to the security agencies. At an appropriate time when investigation are done the public will be updated,” he added.

According to Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Police Spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan, following the Kyengera shooting incident, a suspect—whose identity is currently being withheld—was arrested during a subsequent operation related to the incident.

“The suspect alleges that the deceased male in UPDF attire and others, currently at large, intercepted and kidnapped him earlier that day while he was with friends and family in Buwama. The suspect was reportedly transferred to the alleged kidnappers’ vehicle, registration number UAK 375U, a silver Toyota Progress,” Owoyesigyire said.

Meanwhile, in a new development, police have arrested a primary suspect in connection with the shooting that occurred, which resulted in two fatalities.

“Upon reaching Buddo, the suspect claims he managed to disarm one of the kidnappers, leading to the shootout that resulted in the deaths of the alleged kidnapper and a passerby, Nalumansi Evelyne Zaliya.”

The police said the bodies have been taken to the City Mortuary at Mulago for post mortem examination as investigations continue.

“Materials of evidential value that  include a Pistol  have been recovered and will aid in the ongoing investigations,” police said.

The shooting coincided with heightened security measures in the Kampala Metropolitan Area, which were in place to address and suppress the youth-led March to Parliament, an anti-corruption protest.
