Gov't concerned over surge in Ugandan women registering foreign male spouses
Now that the law is no longer against marrying people from other races, interracial marriages are on the rise.

Kampala, Uganda | By Michael Wandati | The Government of Uganda faces more than just issues of corruption and disillusioned youth; there is also an unusual trend regarding marriage registrations.

According to records from the Directorate of Immigration and Emigration, there seems to be a significant increase in foreign nationals being registered as spouses of Ugandans.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs is particularly concerned about the rising number of women applying for dependent permits for their foreign male partners.

At a security briefing held at the police headquarters in Naguru, the Ministry of Internal Affairs Spokesperson Simon Peter Mundeyi described this trend as “troubling.”

“In traditional African society, there are norms and men are typically providers rather than dependents,” he said.

The ministry contends that allowing foreign men to gain residency through Ugandan women could disrupt traditional societal roles and potentially impact broader immigration policies.

Mundeyi reported that this trend has caused concern within the immigration department, leading to a firm stance against such applications.

The spokesperson emphasized that the department is closely scrutinizing these applications and is contemplating implementing stricter measures to address the issue.
