Kakamega, Kenya | By Michael Wandati | At least five people lost their lives in a tragic accident on Sunday involving a trailer, a tractor, and a sedan in the Murgus area along the Eldoret-Malaba highway in Kakamega County.

According to police reports, two other individuals sustained injuries in the morning collision. The incident occurred when the trailer driver, allegedly speeding from Eldoret, struck the rear of a tractor, lost control, and then collided with an oncoming Toyota Probox.

The victims in the Probox were five family members returning home after attending a wedding in Busia. Only two passengers in the vehicle survived the crash, both of whom were injured and are currently receiving treatment at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret. The bodies of the deceased have been taken to Webuye Hospital morgue.

Lugari sub-county police commander Julius Melly confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.

This incident adds to a worrying trend of fatal accidents in the region. On Saturday, a multiple-vehicle collision in the Migaa area resulted in the death of at least one person, while 44 others were injured. The crash, involving a Simba bus and other vehicles, took place at Molo’s Twin Bridge along the Eldoret-Nakuru Highway.

Just days earlier, on August 20, at least 13 people were killed and 36 others injured in the same area. The accident occurred when a bus, whose brakes reportedly failed, lost control, crashed into several vehicles, and eventually landed in a ditch.

In another tragic incident on Thursday night, two people were killed in a collision between a school bus and a trailer on the Gitaru-Kikuyu Road in Kiambu County. The bus, which had been hired for private use and was not carrying students at the time, veered off the road and landed in a ditch after trying to avoid the stalled trailer. Ten others were injured and taken to the hospital.

These accidents have highlighted the need for improved road safety measures, especially as the Kenya National Highways Authority works on upgrading hazardous stretches of road.

In light of the recent tragedies, the National Transport and Safety Authority has urged all road users to exercise caution, particularly with the upcoming school term.
