Nairobi, Kenya | By Michael Wandati | Kenya’s Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has refuted claims of personal discord between himself and Raila Odinga, who is currently a candidate for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.
Gachagua clarified that previous conflicts stemmed from Raila’s bid for the same position as President William Ruto, rather than personal differences.
Despite their past contentious interactions and verbal exchanges, Gachagua stressed that the disagreements were purely political and not personal. He made these remarks during Raila Odinga’s candidacy launch for the AUC chairmanship at State House, Nairobi.
“Somebody may ask, why is Rigathi Gachagua who has before had issues with the leadership of Raila… As a truthful man, I had nothing against him; it’s only that we were competing for the same position between him and my boss,” Gachagua said amidst laughter from the crowd.
Gachagua expressed his endorsement of Raila Odinga for the AUC chairmanship, asserting confidence in Raila’s qualifications and ability to perform effectively in the role.
“Today we are going to unveil the transformation of Raila Odinga from a national leader to an African statesman. And for us in leadership, we have learnt great lessons of resilience, endurance, and perseverance.

“Now that he is going for a bigger sit in Africa, all of us, from the president, and the rest of Kenya are behind him,” the DP said.
The Deputy President conveyed his well-wishes to Raila Odinga for his bid for the AUC chairmanship.
“Honourable Raila, as a man who listens to the ground, let me confirm to you, that all Kenyans across the political divide, and communities are in support of your candidature and we wish you well.”
