Nairobi, Kenya | By Michael Wandati | The unveiling of Raila Odinga as the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson candidate at State House, Nairobi was lightened by a humorous moment involving former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.
During the event, President William Ruto invited Obasanjo to the podium to address the diplomats. As Obasanjo approached the microphone, Ruto signaled for a step board to be brought out, assuming it would be needed to help the former President reach the microphone due to his height.
However, upon reaching the podium, Obasanjo playfully attempted to push the step board aside with his foot. When that didn’t work, he bent down and tried to move it with his hand, prompting laughter from the audience.
This brought laughter from President Ruto and the audience.
After clearing his throat, an undeterred Olusegun Obasanjo said, “I am not as short as you think I am.”
He then went on to address the guests.
Obasanjo expressed strong belief that Raila Odinga will bring significant positive change to Africa if he secures the position of African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson.
At the event announcing Raila’s candidacy for the role at State House Nairobi, Obasanjo conveyed his confidence that Raila will guide the continent toward unprecedented progress.
“He will make Africa proud, he will make Africa powerful, he will make Africa peaceful and he will make Africa prosperous. We need it all and you can count on us for support and you have seen,” he said.
Obasanjo emphasized that securing the position would bring added responsibility for Raila and the leaders supporting his candidacy.
“If we support you and you get there, we have the responsibility to make sure you succeed. We will do our part, we pray to God that you do your part,” he added.
He also noted that Raila’s candidacy is receiving substantial support domestically.

“He is not only a candidate for Kenya but the East African community,” he stated.
Obasanjo added that Africa requires Raila’s leadership during this crucial phase of the continent’s development, especially as the world faces widespread wars and conflicts.
“A war is going on in Europe and we are suffering from hunger in Africa. We are wallowing in poverty and we cannot get out of this unless we put our house in order as countries in Africa and as collectively a continent,” he explained.
He reminded Raila of the importance of securing an AU visa to facilitate easier movement of people across the continent.
