Rwampara, Uganda | By Michael Wandati | In a tragic incident in Rwampara District, Allen Tusehmereirwe lost her life when a drum used for distilling the local brew, waragi, suddenly burst into flames.

The accident occurred in Rurama Cell, Bugamba sub-county, where Tusehmereirwe and her husband, Nelson Orikimanya, were distilling the local brew in a nearby swamp on Thursday 29, August 2024.

Rwizi Region police spokesperson, Samson Kasasira, reported that the drum, which had been in use for three years, developed a leak due to improper sealing during the distillation process.

The resulting pressure caused the drum to explode, sending its cover flying and striking Tusehmereirwe in the back.

Yosam Karyango Mirembe, the chairperson of Rurama Cell, described the incident as devastating, highlighting the severe impact that nearly shattered Tusehmereirwe’s head.

Orikimanya mentioned that they had been using the distilling drum for the past three years without incident, making the sudden explosion all the more shocking.
