Butaleja, Uganda | By Michael Wandati | A 16-year-old student, Mwajuma Nankya, in her second year at Busolwe Seed School, has given birth to quadruplets at Busolwe Hospital in Butaleja District, bringing renewed focus to the problem of teenage pregnancy in the area.

Nankya, who hails from Namulemu Village in Butaleja Town Council, delivered the four premature babies at just 29 weeks into her first pregnancy. Dr. David Okanya, the Medical Superintendent at Busolwe Hospital, confirmed that all four newborns are girls, with birth weights of 1.4 kg, 1.3 kg, 1.2 kg, and 1.1 kg.

Due to the premature nature of the delivery, Dr. Okanya reported that both the mother and her babies have been transferred to Mbale Referral Hospital for advanced neonatal care.

“Given the premature delivery, we had to ensure the mother and her babies receive the best possible care. They have been transferred to Mbale Referral Hospital for neonatal management, and we are in constant communication with the team there. I am pleased to report that both the mother and her children are currently doing well,” he stated.

The father of the quadruplets is reportedly a fellow student at a secondary school within Butaleja District, further bringing to light the complex social challenges confronting the young family.

Butaleja District has previously garnered attention for having the country’s youngest grandmother, emphasizing the ongoing issue of teenage pregnancies in the area.

The birth of these quadruplets underscores the pressing need for enhanced education and resources to prevent teenage pregnancies and provide support for young mothers.

Healthcare providers, including Dr. Okanya, will continue to closely monitor the health of Mwajuma Nankya and her quadruplets as they receive specialized care at Mbale Referral Hospital.
