Kampala, Uganda | By Michael Wandati | Bobi Wine, the president of the National Unity Platform (NUP) party, is scheduled to undergo surgery following an incident in Bulindo, Kira Municipality, where he was reportedly shot in the leg by the police.
NUP spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi announced during a press briefing that Robert Kyagulanyi popularly known as Bobi Wine will undergo surgery to remove fragments of a tear gas canister from his leg.
The opposition leader is currently receiving emergency treatment at St. Francis Hospital Nsambya.
“He is in pain but has been sedated,” says Ssenyonyi.
On Tuesday, police denied reports that Robert Kyagulanyi had been shot, instead suggesting that he “stumbled and got injured while getting into his vehicle.”
Mr. Kyagulanyi, 42, is a former pop star who transitioned into politics, first winning the Kyaddondo East parliamentary seat in a by-election in 2017.

In the 2021 presidential election, Mr. Kyagulanyi challenged President Yoweri Museveni, taking over from Dr. Kizza Besigye, who had previously contested the presidency four times without success.
According to official results, Mr. Museveni secured 5.85 million votes, or 58.64 percent, while Mr. Kyagulanyi garnered 3.48 million votes, or 34.83 percent. Mr. Kyagulanyi disputed the results, claiming the election was marred by irregularities.
Despite the disputed outcome, Kyagulanyi’s National Unity Platform (NUP) won a significant number of seats in the Eleventh Parliament, making him the leader of the Opposition.
