Kampala, Uganda | By Michael Wandati | Uganda is mourning the loss of Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, the State Minister for Defense and Veteran Affairs, who passed away after suffering a heart attack.
According to her close friend, Hope Bizimana, Mateke, who also served as the Kisoro District Woman Member of Parliament (MP), was rushed to Mengo Hospital but sadly died upon arrival.
Mateke, who had been appointed State Minister in April, was 50 years old at the time of her passing.
Born on July 15, 1974, in Chahi Sub-county, Kisoro District, located in the Kigezi region, Mateke was the daughter of Philemon Mateke, a former State Minister for Regional Affairs, and Joy Rwanfizi Mateka, a professional teacher.
Sarah Mateke was the third of six siblings.
Mateke’s educational journey began at Seseme Integrated School, followed by her secondary education at Maryhill High School.
She later pursued higher education at Bugema University, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and a Master’s degree in Public Health.

Additionally, she obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration and Management from Uganda Christian University.
Her sudden death has left many in shock as the country reflects on her service and contributions both as a politician and a dedicated public servant.
