Nairobi, Kenya | By Michael Wandati | As the Senate prepares to discuss the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, a recent opinion poll has identified Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as the preferred successor.
The survey conducted by Infotrack indicated that approximately 20% of respondents favored Kindiki for the position. Analysis of the data suggested that Kindiki’s popularity stems from his track record in his current role and his experience in the political arena.
In the same poll, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi were tied, each garnering 5% support. Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro followed closely with 4% each, while former Prime Minister Raila Odinga received just 2%.
The Infotrack poll surveyed 1,000 Kenyans from all 47 counties, providing a comprehensive view of public opinion. Notably, 24% of male respondents favored Kindiki, compared to 16% of female respondents. Among age groups, 21% of individuals aged 36-45 expressed a preference for Kindiki to assume the second most powerful position in the country.

The support for the former Tharaka Nithi Senator was particularly strong in the Rift Valley, Mt. Kenya, Nairobi, and Eastern regions.
Gachagua is facing multiple charges in his impeachment, including gross violation of the constitution, abuse of office, and gross misconduct. If impeached, he could face significant repercussions, including the end of his political career and the inability to hold any future public office.
To combat the ouster motion that was approved by the National Assembly last week, Gachagua will need to engage in intense lobbying and persuasion efforts.
