Nairobi, Kenya | By Michael Wandati | Kenya’s Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is currently in stable condition and undergoing tests at Karen Hospital, as confirmed by Dr. Dan Gikonyo, the Chief Cardiologist and founder of the facility.
Dr. Gikonyo reported that Gachagua was admitted on Thursday at 3:00 PM due to “intense chest pains.” The Deputy President was initially scheduled to testify in the Senate for cross-examination during his impeachment trial prior to his hospitalization.
“He is stable at the moment and we are still carrying out more tests to rule out any serious issues,” Dr. Gikonyo said.
Dr. Gikonyo indicated that stress could be a potential factor behind Gachagua’s sudden health issues and mentioned that the Deputy President would be under observation for three days before being released from the hospital.

Gachagua’s absence from the Senate due to medical reasons was contested by the National Assembly, his opponent in the impeachment trial, with attorney James Orengo demanding verification of his health status.
While Gachagua’s legal representatives requested to delay the trial until October 22, 2024, the National Assembly advocated for a vote on a procedural motion to move it to Saturday.
Ultimately, the Senators dismissed the motion, opting to continue with the trial and vote on the impeachment motion, even as Gachagua’s legal team walked out of the proceedings.
