Kampala, Uganda | By Michael Wandati | Boda boda riders in Namuwongo A Zone, Makindye Division, bravely thwarted an armed robbery at Mama-Mia Supermarket on Bukasa Road, Kampala, after intercepting two suspects.
The alleged robbers, Edwin Lukwago and Ezekiel Asiimwe, attempted to flee, prompting a high-speed pursuit by the vigilant riders, Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire reported.
The attempted robbery happened around 9:30 pm over the weekend. The suspects, who intended to raid the supermarket, were spotted by nearby residents who promptly alerted the boda-boda riders. During the chase, one suspect discarded a pistol into a drainage channel before the riders managed to capture both men.
A security guard from SGA, who witnessed the suspect tossing the firearm, quickly informed the police. Law enforcement retrieved the weapon, which contained eight rounds of ammunition, and it has since been handed over to ballistic experts to investigate any possible connections to previous crimes, according to Owoyesigyire.
The police have taken both suspects into custody and will conduct a thorough investigation into their possible criminal history and the origins of the firearm. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ASP) Kituuma Rusoke praised the residents for avoiding mob justice, emphasizing that swift violence could compromise crucial information for investigators.

Rusoke commented, “If they had executed the suspects, we could have lost significant information. There’s a possibility this gun is linked to someone else who might have provided it to these suspects.” He expressed gratitude to the community for cooperating with law enforcement.
This incident echoes a similar case in August, where boda-boda riders apprehended two armed men in Kampala after they snatched a handbag from a teacher along Nakasero Road.
