Masaka, Uganda | By Michael Wandati | A 34-year-old commercial sex worker, Stella Namwanje, has been arrested after a shocking video surfaced over the weekend showing her abusing a ten-month-old baby entrusted to her care.
Namwanje is currently detained at Masaka Central Police Station. The graphic footage, recorded by Namwanje herself, depicts her committing appalling acts, including defecating on the infant’s head and forcing the baby to consume her faeces and urine.
Twaha Kasirye, the Greater Masaka Regional Police spokesperson, confirmed that the suspect has admitted to the abuse. The police have secured the video as evidence, and a preliminary mental health assessment has been ordered to evaluate Namwanje’s psychological state before formal charges are filed.
The baby, who had been left in Namwanje’s care by the mother for two days, is now receiving treatment at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for both physical and emotional trauma.

Kasirye highlighted an increase in similar incidents across Uganda, referencing a notable 2022 case involving Dorothy Nabulime. Nabulime was filmed forcing her two-year-old child into a basin in a violent manner, sparking widespread condemnation and leading to an 18-month prison sentence.
Namwanje’s case has reignited public outcry and discussion about child protection and the urgent need for stricter screening measures for child caregivers. Authorities are calling for greater vigilance to ensure children’s safety and prevent future cases of abuse.
